2013 and January Goals

I have never been one for chomping at the bit for setting goals. The fact that it took me years to make this 99 in 999 is quite evidence of that.
Nonetheless, I did set a goal to make yearly and monthly goals and then to stick to them, so that I will indeed do.

#80: Make monthly and yearly goals - and stick to them! (1/3) (3/33)

2013
1. Complete my cross stitch.
I have been working on the same one for...over 5 years. I'd say it's about time, don't you?

2. Finish 2011 and 2012 scrapbooks for Mom and Dad.

3. Keep up with pictures better.
I'm not sure what all this entails...I just need to do it better than I have been in the past.

January '13
1. Finish Mom & Dad's calendar.
2. Start on the History of the World.
3. Take down the Christmas tree.

February '13
1. Finish 2011 scrapbook for Mom and Dad.

#19: A work in progress. A Classic

#19: Finish a book a month.

January 2013: Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie

There are a few books on my "mental to-read list", that list includes Les Miserables, Peter Pan, The Grapes of Wrath...and I'm sure a few more that I have thought about from time to time, but I just can't recollect at the moment.

On our first Valentines Day together in 2008, Brandon sent me on a scavenger hunt around Buena Vista and Lexington and each stop had a different gift for me.  One of the stops was Community Bank in Lexington where we (as we still do) banked, the present they had for me was a beautiful copy of Peter Pan, complete with illustrations and a beautiful jacket cover.  Now, if you know much about me, you know that I am in love with British culture, especially the time frame under Edward VII and George V. I don't know if I care much about them as monarchs in particular, but that era of time is so appealing to me (btw, that's 1901-1936 if you didn't know). Peter Pan was published just after the Edwardian Era and just before the first World War (which is my favorite of the favorite) in 1911 and everything about it just makes me want to squeal with joy.  It took me a little bit to understand his humor (it's rather amusing once you get the hang of it) and the only thing I had against it was that I wished that there had been a little more time spent in London than Neverland! Ha! I love the idea of a Nursery where all of the children sleep, and a Nanna (although I'm not sure I want to employ a dog for the job), and just...everything. I was a little taken aback by the fact that the lost boys killed so many pirates, though. Disney glossed over that part if I remember correctly - although it has been a long long time since I've seen the movie, so they may not have.
Regardless, this is another story that I can put back on my shelf and I thoroughly look forward to the day when I can read it aloud to my children while sitting by the fire in the nursery.
I found it interesting and good timing that we watched Marry Poppins (which takes place in 1910) at the same time I was reading Peter Pan.

"You, boy," [Hook] said, addressing John, "you look as if you had a little pluck in you.  Didst never want to be a pirate, my hearty?"
Now John had sometimes experienced this hankering at maths. prep.; and he was struck by Hook's picking him out.
"I once thought of calling myself Redhanded Jack," he said diffidently.
"And a good name too.  We'll call you that here, bully, if you join."
"What do you think, Michael?" asked John.
"What would you call me if I join?" Michael demanded.
"Blackbearded Joe."
Michael was naturally impressed.  "What do you think, John?"  He wanted John to decided, and John wanted him to decide.
"Shall we still be respectful subjects of the King?" John inquired.
Through Hook's teeth came the answer: "You would have to swear, 'Down with the King.'"
Perhaps John had not behaved very well so far, but he shone out now.
"Then I refuse," he cried, banging the barrel in front of Hook.
"And I refuse," cried Michael.
"Rule Britannia!" squeaked Curly.

A little update

It's been a little bit since I've posted... oops.
But THAT was not on my list! Intentionally, I might add. :)

But let's move on - some of the things that I've started on/completed.  Um, now that I look at it, none of them are complete, they're all being worked on.

#1: Own all of the Classic Disney movies. (16/52)
Brandon bought me Cinderella.

#20: Read a history of the world.

I've started a book and I've read a little bit, but I want this to be a journey, not a race.

#35: Watch 30 movies off of Brandon's "list". (1/30)
Marry Poppins! And Brandon loved it.

#69: Get my eyes checked this year and then again in 2 years.

I finally went in after 4 years and got my eyes checked. It only took a torn contact and a scratched cornea to make that happen...

#92: Catch up with the scrapbooks for Mom and Dad.
I've nearly finished with 2011.

The start of a journey

#82: Read the entire standard works - cover to cover.

It has been a goal of mine for a long, long time to read the entire standard works, and I think I've started reading each of them in turn (except, perhaps, the Doctrine & Covenants...not sure why), but I've only ever finished the Book of Mormon. It actually kind of depresses me that I have read the entire series of Harry Potter more than I have the scriptures.  Granted, I listen to HP, so that makes it easier, and I refuse to listen to the scriptures on tape...I mean, have you ever listened to it? It's awful.
Anyway, back in January/February I made a chart (I'm fabulous at making charts) that broke down the entire Old Testament into a reading schedule that would allow me to read it in just under a year (and since I would nearly be done by now if I had kept to it...you can see that I am terrible at following charts).  I think I made it one day and just lost interest because I had exhausted all of my interest in making the chart, and not in following through.

Well, as it is one of my 99 goals to read the entire standard works, and as that is certainly not something that I can accomplish in a short period of time, I've restarted.  It's 3 chapters a day.  I can do that. I can do that. I can do that.

I have the hiccups and it is DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

I can do that!! Now, here's my game plan. I will inevitably fail to read for a day or so in the next year as I trudge through the who's who of ancient genealogies, but I'm going to break this into weeks (it goes along nicely with Goal #83) and END my week on Sunday.  Now, this may not seem like it makes any difference, but it does. Sunday is the day when I get the "spiritual bug" and I am more willing to sit for a few hours and read the scriptures.  This is awesome because if I END my week on Sunday, then I can make up for any chapters that I missed that week instead of trying to read my own mind and see into the future.

Hiccup.

I can do that. I did indeed read my first three chapters today (after moving my ribbon from chapter 2 where I left off back in January/February).

Hiccup.

This is going to be fun!

Hiccup.

I'm going to go back to listening to Harry Potter now.

Hiccup.  ARRRGGHHH!!!!

#19 - A work in progress

#19: Finish a book a month.

December 2012: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire.

This is a book that I started back in August after Brandon got it for me for my birthday, but it was slightly shunted to the side once I got The Casual Vacancy when it came out. Sorry, my love of Rowling just took over me.  Anyway, I liked this book.  It's a spin on the Cinderella story, obviously, and I really enjoyed it.  I expected there to be more magic in it (after reading Wicked, and the fact that it's Cinderella), and was surprised that there wasn't any at all. And my only real gripe was that the cover of the book was a scene from the last part of the book, so even though it wasn't in context, I knew a couple of things were going to happen once I read certain parts of the book.
However, at the end after the ball, I had a pretty big shock of "holy cow, did that really just get revealed? I didn't see that coming at all!" followed by a "...holy $#!%..." at the very end.
It felt like it stretched on for a while in the first 3/4 but I don't know if that was more due to the fact that I wasn't reading it on a regular basis. Quite possible.

December Goals

Part of goal #80 is to make monthly goals, so here goes!

Goal #1: Finish 2 books
Goal #2: Print a new cleaning sheet for the fridge.
Goal #3: Finish the 2011 scrapbook for Mom and Dad.

I finished a book tonight, so I think I can do #1 okay.

#17 - check!

#17: Create a book list.

This took me a little while, but I went through all of the books I own (I sign and date the inside of the front cover whenever I finish a book) and racked my brain to remember the books that for whatever reason I don't still have, and I made myself a list. And I put it in this book:

Instead of just doing a list in chronological order of all of the books I've read, I split some of them into different sections.  Jane Austen, J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Kate Morton all have their own pages so that I can keep their books together.
And I know it's lame that I chose this cover because it's all the fad right now, but I deliberately chose the original quote...  I'm all about Great Britain and I'm in love with the WWI/WWII era in GB. Granted, more so pre-WWI, but whatever.  And let it be known that I resisted the pink one (I love pink more than I love GB) that said "Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake" because it was just too kitsch.
